Nothing to Something

"People surprise you. You think they gone be a nothing and they turn out to be a something" --Curtis Jackson's Grandfather I was watching the "Behind the Music" of Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and I caught the above quote from 50 Cents grandfather and I gotta' say that, I like it! The reason I like that quote is because people are so quick to judge a person by their trials and tribulations, when in truth, you must go through something to have a story to tell. You must go through levels of pain in order to appreciate the joy. If you are not blessed with situations to go through and everything comes to you quite easily, how would you know to respect the struggle? Or be grateful for the struggle because it should have made you a better person (humble, responsible and quietly powerful) , furthermore, why would anyone see you as GREAT? Because in essence you would have done nothing to earn it, nothing, for anyone to follow, resp...

Just cause you love me and I love you...

"Just cause I love you and you love me; It doesn't mean that we're meant to be" Jazmine Sullivan The above quote is the truest statement I've ever heard spoken in my life. As old as I am and as much wisdom as I've been blessed enough to collect to keep and live by. I don't think that I've ever thought about love in a relationship that way. I don't know about you, but I've been in love with two men at the same time before and it was the most difficult position I've ever been in. Because I always believed that things happen for a reason and so, it must be meant. But that's not always the case. Sometimes things are placed in your path to make you either appreciate what you already have, maybe uplift you to keep you going, or give you a hint of wisdom to do something different. Doesn't always mean that they are meant to stay in your life forever. We've all heard that saying " Some people come into your life for a life tim...

Poet Elizabeth Alexander (after the fact)

Her poem in words, were great. The poem in language was simple but inspiring. However I looked at the simplicity of her performance. She read off of paper (rather than note cards), nor memorization. She gave voice (by projecting) but no emotional tone. She stayed even toned, robotic sounding almost which could have been read from the crowd as "I want you to hear what I'm saying but I need to pace myself so I won't mess up and I need to hurry up." She gave no feeling that HER words needed, because they were so important. She had no beginning. No middle. No end. The audience didn't even know that she was done or that she had concluded her poem. Now, please note that I do not judge her on what she wrote as far as the style whether it be "Prose, Sonnet or Free verse and so on because in my opinion regardless of what you write, it is up to you to bring it to life. So you ask, overall was the poem there? Yes. Now ask me if she stood behind it? No. That is where...

Who are you to say, who or what makes him or her a poet?

I’m a poet because I say so and no one can tell me different, doesn’t matter if my poetry is not what you like or what you think is prestige or what does not follow the traditional way of which you all go by. Although I respect the tradition, unfortunately it’s just not my mission to follow you. It is only in my best interest to do me, be me and travel the road that was given and best laid out for me. Poetry is not who says it’s poetry-poetry is whatever is in your heart and whatever is in your heart is what will bleed upon any page that you write it on. And if it is in you, then please know, that it is you, that is your poetry story and if it is meant to be heard, then you will be known, if it is not, then it is only your song privately to keep. And sure you can take a course or a few classes to better enhance your gift, maybe even get a degree in creative writing, english or journalism for your chance to concretely say that you are now official. But I believe that when you were born,...

How do you know you have a love for writing?

You know you have a love for writing when every subject you’re passionate about you find yourself jotting, scribbling, tattooing it any chance you get on any thing that will allow your word’s to be legibly seen. When you find yourself participating in the area you constantly indulge in at home. When you allow your creativity to guide you to start trying new genre’s of writing which is something you wouldn’t usually do; but for some reason your passion and desire is drawing you to and you find your pen gliding to begin a new journey of adventures, exploring your writing abilities which will soon lead you to the writing of your choice, your favorite, whether it be essays, comedy, non-fiction, children stories, fiction, screen plays, poetry and so much more. But when you find it, oh, when you find it-what a joy that will be, what an awakening. To enjoy what you love; to find what you enjoy. So, how do you know you have a love for writing? When you pick up a pen or a pencil and truly love...

Poetry, Spoken Word, Hip-Hop; which one?

So many people ask this question, which one? I ask, why do we have to choose? I say, I love them all, and to be honest, I am all. I do all. I started writing poetry at the age of twelve, starting writing rhymes at the age of fourteen and performing them at the age of eighteen. As for spoken word, I began that journey at age fifteen. You see, I’m in a generation of all and I see nothing wrong with that. I believe that they are all great mediums for whatever your gift can be utilized and/or transformed through. I feel that it’s whatever one feels most comfortable doing, which one comes natural or whatever is your preference. I also believe that neither one is better than the other, they are all beautiful, they all evoke different modes, messages, feelings and era of times for a variety of people. And not only that it kind of steams me to know that people want other’s to choose between the three because the truth of the matter is; if you’re gifted enough, talented enough, great enough, yo...
